Greek Architecture Article
There are so many buildings in the world. The Lincoln Memorial and so many other buildings. But what influenced the people that made these building. These buildings have been believed to be to influenced by Greek Architecture. Whey do some people say that? Just look at the columns in the Lincoln Memorial. Do you see the columns? The Lincoln Memorial has a type of columns Doric columns made by of Greek Architecture. One building that I think that influenced Lincoln Memorial is the Temple of Athena Nike.
The Lincoln Memorial began being built in 1914, three years later (1917), it was finished. The memorial has 36 Doric columns representing the states of the Union (at the time Lincolns death). Inside the building is a 19-foot marble statue of Abraham Lincoln, which was made by Daniel Chester French.
The Temple of Athena Nike was destroyed by Persians in480 B.C, but was not rebuilt until 435 B.C. The temple was completed in 420 B.C. This temple is considerably smaller than the other temples of the Acroplis. The Temple of Athena Nike is the earliest Ionic building on the Acroplis. The man how created the Temple of Athena Nike is Kallikrates, he made four Ionic columns on the outside of the temple and is 11 feet tall.
The reason why I think the Lincoln Memorial was influenced by the Temple of Athena Nike is because the Temple of Athena Nike is dedicated to Athena Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, and the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated to Abraham Lincoln (for freeing the slaves). Another reason is because Abraham Lincoln won the Civil War and Athena Nike is the goddess of Victory, so you see the comparison between them. The Lincoln Memorial and the Temple of Athena Nike look similar, if you take the Temple of Athena Nike and but it to the end of the Lincoln Memorial, it takes up a half of the Lincoln Memorial. So, you would need two temples to cover up the Lincoln Memorial.
That is why I think that the Lincoln Memorial was influenced by the Temple of Athena Nike.
